September 1954 unter dem Namen Tonight Premiere. Vorläufer war eine regionale Show aus New York. Erster Moderator war der Komiker und Musiker Steve Allen. Die Sendung wechselte bis 1962 mehrfach den Gastgeber und ihren Namen. Dann übernahm Johnny Carson und moderierte 30 Jahre lang die Show. Erst seitdem trägt sie den Namen „The Tonight Show“.
